FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT COACHING
HOW DO I KNOW IF I WOULD BENEFIT?
Coaches work closely with their clients to understand and define what they really want. Some like the term goals; others prefer to talk about changes or outcomes. A good coach helps you to get focus and rapidly see results IF the desire to succeed is strong enough. The emphasis is all on you and what you want to achieve. If you think about where you are today and where you want to be, that bit in the middle can be a big, confusing, uncertain grey area. Coaching helps bridge the gap so you can finally cross over.
Coaching works because it is a very ACTIVE process. It’s a series of commitments between yourself and your coach to learn new skills, change behaviours, or even just think differently. Norman Vincent Peale said, “Change your thoughts and you change your world.” A good coach will find the best in you, bring it out, and take you along new pathways.
Coaching is very different from counseling or consulting. It rarely deals with the past, what was and why but focuses on where you are today and where you want to be. People often hire consultants to evaluate and give advice in their specialised area. In coaching, you have the answers and the power in your life to move ahead. Your coach will listen to your thoughts and ideas but ask questions that push you into a higher level of thinking. More importantly, your coach gives you the guidance, confidence, belief, support, accountability and sounding board to do the quantum leap from talking about something to making it a reality.
How do I know if I would benefit? Here’s a couple of questions that may give you the answer.
Alexis Carrel from Reflections on
Life said, “All of us, at certain moments of our lives, need to take advice
and to receive help from other people.” To get started find and interview one or more potential coaches. It’s important that the “fit” is comfortable and you feel confident with the person chosen. Once you decide, get started. Often, it’s that step, which is a commitment to yourself, that is the most difficult.
How often you and your coach “meet” is negotiable, but weekly sessions are the norm. These can be by phone or face to face at a designated time each week. How long you keep your coaching relationship is different for every one. There can be satisfying results in as little as one session but some clients stay for years. A commitment of 3 months is recommended. Rather than thinking of coaching as a “quick fix”, think of it as a partnership between you and your coach to design and build the life you really want. Doing things differently, looking at things differently can take awhile but also can last a lifetime.
The cost of coaching varies depending on who the coach is and how you want the relationship to work. In many cases, the initial consultation is free.
