HOW BIG IS YOUR HUMAN RESOURCES HEADACHE?
There are many staff issues that can cause managers a human resources headache. Here are some of the top ones—negativity, not being a team player, always late for work, disorganised, achieves little, frequent illness, lack of respect, gossips, personal problems, does not listen, has an “it’s not my job” attitude, clock watcher, too many personal phone calls, inconsiderate of others, resistant to change.
Take this true-or-false quiz to find out how big your human resources headache is.
1. You have a frequently absent employee T / F
2. You have an employee you’ve worked and worked with but nothing changes T / F
3. Instead of a team working together for the good of the organisation, you have an ‘us vs them’ environment T / F
4. You have an employee who can’t or won’t do what they are supposed to do T / F
5. You often find yourself in a revolving door-turnover situation T / F
6. An employee who has been counseled is spreading the bad attitude to others T / F
7. You have an employee who is not doing his or her fair share T / F
8. You don’t like negative confrontations so you put off corrective action and the problem gets even worse. T / F
9. You have an employee who can’t change. T / F
Diagnosis: Count the number of ‘Ts’ you’ve circled and interpret as follows:
0-1 You're lucky. You don’t have a headache, in fact, you are probably in management heaven. You either have the world’s greatest staff or you perform magic. 2-3 You do have a headache. Take two panadol and seek relief and understanding by contacting us. 4-5 This is where most managers find themselves. You have a serious headache but help is available. Contact us soon. 6-9 You have near migraine symptoms. Few people can stay in this condition for long and keep their sense of purpose, health and well-being. If you don’t seek help, it’s probably because you no longer believe things can improve. Getting some outside support and a practical action plan will put you on the road to relief and renewed enthusiasm. Take action now.
